August 31. In Tashkent the extraordinary 6th session of the Supreme Council was held. The state independence of Uzbekistan was declared. The Declaration of the Supeme Council on state independence of Uzbekistan was issued. A corresponding resolution stated that the anniversary of Uzbek independence would be September 1. The law on the bases of state independence was issued.

September 6. A decree of President Islam Karimov "On forming the Ministry of defense" was issued. 

September 7. A decree of President Islam Karimov "On the formation of the national bank of foreign economic activity" was issued. 

September 25. A decree of President Islam Karimov on the formation of the taxation committee was issued. 

September 26. A decree of President Islam Karimov on the abolition of the union-republican KGB of the Uzbek SSR and formation of the National security service of the Repbulic of Uzbekistan responsible to the President was issued. 

September 30. The extraordinary 7th session of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Uzbekistan (RU) was held. The law was issued on giving constitutional status to the law on the bases of state independence of the RU. The Declaration of human rights and freedoms was ratified. The question of fellow citizens living abroad and creation of conditions for their fuller participation in the life of the republic was considered. 

November 18. At the 8th session of the Supreme Council, the state flag of the RU was confirmed. 

December 29. There was a referendum on state independence and presidential elections. The people chose independence and elected Islam Abduganievich Karimov President.
