January 9. President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov received the OSCE general secretary Wilhelm Hoink.   April 8-10. Indonesian President Suharto paid an official visit to Uzbekistan.   May 26. In Minsk, the 17th meeting of CIS heads of state, including President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov, took place.

July 9-10. Turkish Prime minister Tans Chiller paid an official visit to Uzbekistan.  

September 4. Georgian parliament chairman Eduard Shevardnadze paid an official visit to Uzbekistan. He and President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov signed an agreement on friendship and cooperation.  

September 18-20. In Nukus there was a UN-sponsored conference on the Aral Sea, including representatives from the US, Australia, Austria, the UK, Belgium, Italy and others.  

October. A delegation from Uzbekistan took part in the 11th general assembly of the World tourism organization in Cairo. Uzbekistan was elected to the executive committee for environment and deputy chairman of the regional commission for Europe.
