January 2. President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov received a delegation from Daewoo headed by Kim U Djung. They discussed automotive, textile and telecommuncation cooperation.  

February 18. A decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov "On establishing the national export-import insurance company Uzbekinvest was issued.


March 9. Havo yolari's second Boeing-767, called Khiva, landed at Tashkent airport  

March 11. An agreement on cooperation between the president's fund Umid and Boeing was signed intended to prepare specialists in aviation construction, transport and finance.  

March 14. A business seminar of UAE and Persian Gulf states opened in Tashkent.  

March 19. President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov received the president of the Japanese firm Nish ivai, Masatake Kusamichi.  

Marhc 25. A seminar on desertification in Uzbekistan was held as the first step in the work of the UN to fight desertification here.  

March. UzDaewootextiles began production.  

April 2. The Uzbek government and the UN program of development began a global project to improve information exchange and increase access to the Internet.  

April 22-25. The second exhibition of agricultural and food products and packaging was held.  

April 24. A decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov "On measures to stimulate private commercial banks" was issued.  

April 25-26. A meeting on rail construction and highway construction along the route Andijan-Osh-Kashgar received greetings from President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov.  

April 26. An agreement between the Uzbek government, China and Kyrgyzstan on building the Andijan-Osh-Kashgar transport route and railway was signed between Uzbekiston temir iullari, the Chinese ministry of railways and the Kyrgyz ministry of transport and communications.  

May 6. President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov received a delegation from Daewoo headed by its chariman Kim U Djung.  

May 13-16. The first exhibition-sale of modern agricultural mini-technology and equipment was held.  

May 15. A presentation by UzDaewooBank was held in Tashkent.  

May 21. The first conference "Uzbekistan's oil and gas potential" received greetings from President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov.  

May 21-23. The first "Oil and gas-97" conference was held.  

May 22-23.The CIS interstate council on agriculture was held in Tashkent.  

May 26. The conference "Uzbekistan - center of foreign investment in Central Asia" was organized by the Uzbek-US Chamber of commerce.  

May 27-29. In Samarkand the forum of business partners "Great silk road" was held.  

May. In Tashkent, the Dutch subsidiary ABN AMRO Bank opened.  

June 5. President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov received a delegation from the US company Donavant Enterprises headed by the chairman V.B. Donavant Jr. They discussed transport of raw materials and processing of consumer goods, training of specialists in marketing cotton and further cooperation through the JV marketing company UzDAN.  

June 13. President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov received a delegation headed by Daewoo chairman Kim U Djung.  

June 18. In Paris an agreement on creating a JV bank between the NBFEA and Societe Generale was signed.  

June. In Tashkent an association of craftsmen Hunarmand was formed.  

Uzbekselmash and Izhmas, Izhmashmoto and Izhmashlido created a new Uzbek-Russian JV to produce small tractors.  

July 2. A resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers "On procedures to register and liquidate enterprises with foreign investments" was signed.  

July 4. In Brusselles the third meeting of the joint committee EU-Uzbekistan was held.  

July 7. The RJ-85 Avro International plane arrived in Tashkent and on July 10 began regular flights between Tashkent and Urgench.  

July 16. The Uzbek metallurgical combine produced a grinding ball diameter 104 mm for metallurgists in Navoi and Almalyk. This was previously imported.  

August 18. President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov received the chairman of Samsung Electronics Kang Ku Djin from South Korea.  

August. In Jizzak the JV Jizzak Chehiia began producing tomato paste.  

September 16-19 The second international exhibition of textiles and leather produces in Central Asia opened in Tashkent.  

September 22-25. The third trade exhibition "ITF Uzbekistan-97 - Technology and production" opened.  

In Tashkent the Microsoft study center opened. This is the second Microsoft center here.  

October 2-3. The conference "Central Asia: prospects of development and integration in the world economy" opened, including Central Asian countries, Japan, China, Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia, the US and Russia.  

October 6-7. In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the business seminar "Doing business in Uzbekistan" opened.  

October 5. In Tashkent the session of the Uzbek-UK trade and industry council was held.  

October 7. In Tashkent the first meeting the the commission to deepen economic reforms in agriculture was chaired by President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov.  

October 23. In Tashkent the presentation of the Uzbek-Indian JV Korfarmsanoat and an exhibition of the Indian company Kor Helsker opened.  

October 23-24. In Tashkent the conference "Business organizations and innovational structures as engines of economic reform" opened.  

November 17-20. In London the World Tourist market was attended by an Uzbek delegation, including Uzbekturizm, Uzbekiston havo yollari, Turizm on the Great silk road, Uzintur, Osiyo intur business and others.  

November. Construction of the Trans-Asian-Eurpean fiber optics route linked Frankfurt-on-Main and Shanghai via Uzbekistan.  

In Madrid, products of Kuvasai Cement, including slate and alabaster, were awarded the International gold star for quality. Yarn from Halkabad and Beruni cotton enterprises in the Karakalpakstan association Uzpaktasanoatsotish were praised. Uzbek cotton was given the International gold star for quality.  

November. The London gold and precious metals exchange judged Almalyk metallurgtical combine products of high quality. This is the second Uzbek enterprise to receive the award for high quality gold. Navoi metallurgical combine also received it.  

December 2-7. In Malaysia, the aviation and sea technology exhibition "Lima-97" opened. Tashkent aviation builders participated and exhibited the IL-114 passenger liner and the IL-76TD cargo plane.  

December 4-6. The seminar "Reform and development of financial systems in Uzbekistan" was held in Tashkent.  

December 9. In Kuala Lumpur the exhibition "Export potential of Uzbekistan" opened.  

December 19. A decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov "On deepening demonopolization in trade" was issued.  

December. A delegation from the trade and industry chamber of UAE headed by the honorary president Sultan bin Halifa bin Zaed al-Nahaian arrived in Tashkent. They visited the State property committee and met businessmen. They held talks with Uzbekneftegaz and the NBFEA.  

The commission of the federal aviation administration of the US awarded Uzbekiston havo yollari the certificate allowing it to fly across the Atlantic. The first flight was on December 5.  

A credit agreement between the EBRD and Uzbekistan to reconstruct two energy blocks of Syrdarya GRES and increase their capacity to 300,000 kw was signed.  

The Angren firm Uzbekrezinotehnika was awarded the Gold star of the international fund for quality in Madrid.  

In Asaka the Uzbek-Korean JV Uz-Dongvon-K to produce mufflers and exhaust pipes for UzDaewooavto cars and safety equipment for Nexias began construction.  

The Beruni cotton factory and Halkabad cotton factory received Gold stars from the Madrid quality committee.
