Foreign policy. 1997 year


January 10. In Bishkek the interstate council of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan met. The presidents signed an agreement on eternal friendship.  

January 16-17. President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov visited the Slovak Republic on an official visit. The presidents signed an agreement on cooperation.


February 25. CIS defense ministers from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan met in Tashkent, focussing on the armed conflict in Afghanistan.  

May 1. President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov received the general secretary of the World customs organization James Shaver.  

June 2-3. President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov paid an official visit to Kazakhstan. The president signed many bilateral documents. President Nazarbaev awarded President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov the highest Kazakh medal, Gold eagle, for his contribution to strengthening friendship between the countries and regional stability.  

June 18-19. Azerbaijan President Geidar Aliev paid an official visit to Uzbekistan and held talks with President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov. They signed a declaration on cooperation and a protocol on creating an intergovernmental joint commission on cooperation. Other documents on cooperation were signed.  

October 30. Hungarian President Arpad Gents paid an official visit to Uzbekistan and held talks with President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov. The presidents signed a declaration on cooperation and friendship, an agreement on mutual visa-free travel for diplomats and an agreement on cooperation in tourism and trade.  

December 8. The council of prime ministers of Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan met in Tashkent to discuss Central Asian integration. They discussed cooperation in energy, water use, telecommunications and other spheres. Agreements on cooperation in tourism and other areas were signed by Prime ministers A. Djumagulov of Kyrgyzstan, U.Sultanov of Uzbekistan and N. Balgimbaev of Kazakhstan.  

December 22-23. Chairman of the Russian Federation government Viktor Chernomyrdin paid a working visit to Uzbekistan. Joint documents were signed on defending investments, scientific cooperation in peaceful use of atomic energy, cooperation in trade, economics, science and other areas.
