January 16. The agricultural exhibition "International green week" was held in Germany with attendance by an Uzbek delegation. There was a presentation "Economic partner Uzbekistan - trade and cooperation in the food industry"  

January. An Uzbek-Czech JV was founded in Gulistan "Lechiva farmasanoat" to produce medicines.  

High quality paper was produced in Namangan by a Uzbek-German JV using cotton waste lint.


February 2. President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov received a delegation from Caisse headed by its director Jean-Pierre Rosso.  

February 9. A decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov "On measures to improve realization of projects with foreign investment" was issued.  

February. At the aviation display in Le Bourge, the Uzbek IL-76MF and IL-114T were displayed.  

The Almalyk metallurgy combine recieved a diploma and gold prize "For commercial prestige".  

March 5-11. Uzbekistan participated in the International tourist market in Berlin.  

March 5. Havo yollari signed an agreement with Air France on regular flights to Paris.  

March 9-10. The joint Uzbek-Swiss commission for trade-economic cooperation began work to prepare Uzbekistan to apply to the WTO, to liquidate the Aral Sea catatstrophe and to activate Swiss firms in joint projects.  

March 10-13. The third exhibition of agriculture food processing and packaging opened in Tashkent.  

March. A decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov "On deepening economic reforms in agriculture 1998-2000" was issued.  

March 24. An exhibition of JV products "Made in Uzbekistan - JV-98" opened.  

March. In Namangan the Uzbek-German JV Nambum began paper production. Its capacity is 5000 tons a year.  

In Tashkent a seminar "New information technology in banking" attracted Central Asian countries and specialists from the UK, France, Belgium and Greece.  

EBRD and the WB considered a project "Improving the system of sanitary clearning in Tashkent" and offered $45m towards it.  

April 3. A Cabinet of Ministers resolution "On measures to improve administration in the silk industry" was issued.  

April 8. The first session of the Uzbek-Finnish trade-economic and science cooperation commission met.  

May 19. The Uzbek-Slovak commission on trade-economic and science cooperation met.  

May 19-21. The conference "Prospects in oil and gas in Ustiurt district" opened as part of the second exhibition "Oil and gas" in Tashkent.  

June 1. President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov received chairman of the US ExImBank James Harmon.  

June 22. President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov received a delegation from Newmont Gold headed by director Ronald Cambra.  

June. The Central bank approved the opening of the Banque Nationale de Paris in Tashkent. Uzbekistan now works with banks from 13 countries. 

August. The NBU received a certificate from the Association of Asian banks on its joining the association.  

September 21. In Samarkand the conference "Innovation and stabilization of the market: the role of SMEs" opened.  

September 22-24. The fourth Tashkent tourist fair "Tourism on the Silk Road" opened with participation of 300 firms from 35 countries.  

October 2. A decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov "On measures to improve the work of commerical banks" was issued.  

October 5-6. The conference "The Uzbek model of building a market economy" opened with participation of the UN, WB, the IMF and foreign specialists.  

October 14. The Trans-Asian-European fiber optics cable joining Shanghai and Frankfurt-on-Maine started work. Its Uzbek section is Tashkent-Jizzak-Samarkand-Bukhara-Alat, more than 900 km.  

October 20. President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov received a delegation from Daewoo headed by Kim U Djung.  

October. In Vienna there was a conference "Day of the Uzbek economy in Austria". An agreement on cooperation was signed.  

November 10-13. A consumer goods exhibition was held in Tashkent.  

November 18. A resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers "On measures to stimulate and attract foriegn investment in privatization" was issued.  

November 23. President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov received the Israeli aviation industry head Moshe Keret to discussed cooperation between Bedek, Havo yollari and the Tashkent aviation plant.  

November. The French industrial council awarded Uzbek enterprises, including the printing concern Shark, Uzoptbirzhetorg, Uzhimfarm, the Business fund and Transbank.  

The gold star for quality was awarded to the Uzbek firm Farmed in Paris. Farmed has contracts with 60 leading companies from Europe and other countries.  

December 4. President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov received Lukoil president Vagit Alekperov and vice president Djevan Cheloian.  

December 11. A decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov "On transforming the national oil and gas company Uzbekneftegaz into the national holding company Uzbekneftegas was issued.  

December 16. President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov received a delegation from the German firm Tissen Handelsunion AG.  

December. In Urikzo, Tashkent, a new digital phone exchange began construction.
