January 15. A resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers "On measures to reform the banking system" was issued.  

January 26. the IL-114-100 passenger liner took its first test flight, using Canadian engines from Pratt and Whitley and American propellers from Hamilton Standard.  

February 17. President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov received Kim U Djung.


In Hamburg the "Days of the Uzbek economy" exhibition opened. It was attended by presidential adviser V.Golyshev.  

February 23. UzExpoCenter was awarded the international association of marketing and quality's "International gold and silver quality prize 1999".  

February. In Delhi an exhibition was attended by Uzavtosanoat.  

In Tashkent the symposium "Possibility of cooperation to release the social potential of Uzbek women in the 21st c" opened.  

March 11. "Soglom avlod uchun" signed contracts with the Japanese Ambassador Koichi Obata.  

March 23. At UzExpoCenter the exhibition "Made in Uzbekistan" opened.  

March 30. The Intercontinental received first place in the chain for high quality service.  

March. In Andijan the Uzbek-US-Belgian JV Andijan Flarua Oil Kompani began to produce refined cotton oil.  

In Delhi, the fourth session of the Uzbek-Indian trade-economic cooperation commission met. An agreement to open a business council was signed.  

April 2. The first flight of Boeing aircraft under Havo yollari and Avialinia Ukrainy took place.  

April 17. In Angren the Uzbek-German JV Kaoline for kaoline enrichment began work.  

April 22-23. At the Intercontinental the conference "The EU-Central Asia: cooperation in energy" took place.  

May 1. Havo yollari began flights to Nagoi, Japan.  

May 17. The Shurtan gas and chemical complex began use of the 20km railway line Jiiron-Shurtan.  

May 26. President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov received the head of the Japanese ExImBank Hiroshi Iasuda. The bank has financed the Kokdumalak gas compress station, the Bukhara oil refining factory, the Shurtan gas and chemical complex, and the reconstruction of the Fergana oil refining factory. They discussed long-term soft loans to finance chemical, machine building and textile industries.  

May 31. President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov received a delegation headed by the EBRD president Horst Keler.  

June 1. Dresdner Bank AG opened an office in Tashkent.  

June 2. President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov received the Japanese foreign trade organization STRO chairman N.Hatakeiam.  

June 18. In Almalyk the 50th anniversary of the metallurgical combine was celebration. Prime minister U.Sultanov brought greetings from President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov.  

June 29. In Andijan province the Hodjaabad underground gas storage facility opened. President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov participated in the opening.  

June. In Varzik Chust district of Namangan province, a sewing factory bagan work with the participation of the German company Pfaff-Zinger.  

June 27. President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov spoke at the Cabinet of Ministers session about the economic growth in production, agriculture, trade, services and investment.  

June 28. Grain harvesters gathered 3.6m tons of grain. 2.205m tons of grain was purchased by the government. The harvest was 31.1 centners per hectare.  

July. The Samarkand-Marokand electric railway opened.  

September 11-16. In Tashkent the first international printing exhibition opened.  

October 20. The Central bank issued a medallion coin worth 25 sums dedicated to the 800th anniversary of Jaloliddin Manguberdi.  

October 21-25. The exhibition EXPO Italy-99 opened.  

October. The Uzbek-Turkish JV SamKochAvto in Samarkand began production of buses for export.  

December. In Frankfurt-on-Maine an Uzbek-German symposium with a delegation headed by presidential adviser V.Golyshev opened. A forum including Seimens, Tissen-Krup, Daimler-Kreisler and German banks was held.
